Uda, 47, was said to have been arrested on March 13 in Ramallah.
Officials said Uda built a major Hamas military cell in the 1990s, which
also abducted Palestinians suspected of cooperating with Israel.
In 1998, Uda was arrested by the Palestinian Authority. He was released
after several months in prison.
"By the time he was released, he was already considered a senior suspect
wanted by Israel," the military said.
Officials said Uda, regarded as the last of the fugitive Palestinian
insurgency commanders in the West Bank, headed Hamas's military network in
Ramallah. They said Uda provided funds and orders to the Hamas cell based in the West Bank town of Beit Laqya that was
linked to the killing of 10 Israelis.
"He had been under long surveillance and he did not resist arrest," an
official said.
The military said Uda's arrest was the work of the Israel Security
Agency, also responsible for operations in the West Bank. The statement said
ISA and the military have sought to block Hamas efforts to revive its
military network.
"Uda's arrest has been the final stage in thwarting Hamas' military
headquarters in Ramallah, which executed various terror attacks and is
responsible for the murder of more than 70 Israelis," the military said.
"The arrest was made possible by pinpoint intelligence information provided
by ISA."
