Oman asks U.S. help for preventing its C-130 from getting shot out of the sky

WASHINGTON — The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has relayed a request by Oman for defense systems and training for its C-130J-30 aircraft.

The Defense Department agency said the Omani request was worth $76 million and would enhance the defense capabilities of the Gulf Cooperation Council sultanate.

In a statement on Nov. 18, Oman said the support would include the AN/AAQ-24[V] large aircraft infrared countermeasures system, seven AN/AAR-54 missile approach warning systems, two AN/ALR-56M radar warning receivers, two AN/ALE-47 countermeasure dispenser sets as well as communication and navigation equipment. The agency said Oman would also receive software support, aircraft ferry and refueling support as well as training.

"The support for the additional C-130J-30 aircraft will ensure operational capability and will facilitate movement within the region, as well as, support U.S. interests," DSCA said.

"The proposed sale will provide Oman the capability to meet current and future regional threats to the sultanate of Oman," the agency said. "The support for the additional C-130J-30 aircraft will ensure operational capability and will facilitate movement within the region, as well as, support U.S interests."

DSCA said Oman would not have difficulty absorbing support for the C-130J. Oman already operates two Boeing 747s and one Airbus A320 aircraft.

The prime contractor of the proposed contract was identified as Northrop Grumman. The agency said there were no known offset agreements.

"Implementation of this proposed sale will require annual trips to Oman involving up to 10 U.S. Government and 10 contractor representatives for technical reviews/support, and program management for a period of approximately six years," DSCA said.
