A senior Saudi official said the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom would need nuclear reactors to meet its expected energy needs by 2030.

Khaled Suleiman, vice president of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, said Saudi Arabia would need a base load of 40 gigawatts to meet its energy needs, Middle East Newsline reported.

"In 2030, there is a need of at least 40 gigawatts of base load in winter," Suleiman told a conference in Jedda on Oct. 5. "This can be satisfied by nuclear. And in the summer we would increase it to 70-75 gigawatts."

Suleiman's address marked a rare reference by a senior Saudi official of the need for a major nuclear energy program. Saudi Arabia has reported an eight percent increase in power demand over 2009.
