The U.S. embassy in Amman has reported an alert of an insurgency strike
in the Jordanian port of Aqaba. The embassy called on all personnel to avoid
Aqaba and urged Americans to keep away from the central part of the city, Middle East Newsline reported.
"Credible information has been received regarding a possible imminent
threat in the Gulf of Aqaba region," the U.S. embassy on Sept. 15.

The embassy said non-official and personal travel to Aqaba would be
delayed until at least Sept. 17. The statement did not detail the threat.
"For those U.S. citizens resident in Aqaba, the downtown and port areas
should be avoided if possible," the embassy said.
This marked the second warning by the U.S. embassy in Jordan in less
than a month. In August 2010, a Hamas rocket fired from Egypt's Sinai
Peninsula landed in downtown Aqaba, killing a Jordanian and injuring another
four.
The August rocket attack was believed to have targeted the southern
Israeli port city of Eilat. At the time, the State Department warned
Americans of the prospect of another rocket attack in the region.
