The scenario of the exercise with the Gulf Cooperation Council states was said to be based on an attack by Iran,
regarded as the leading threat to the region.
Officials said the GCC-U.S. exercise began on May 5 in Bahrain, home of
the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet. They said the multi-phase exercise has been
directed by U.S. Central Command.
"The exercise is meant to significantly improve GCC military
cooperation," an official said.

Officials said Centcom has
sought to bolster the GCC's air and missile defense capability as well as
communications.
Much of the exercise was designed to take place through military
simulators. Officials said Centcom would focus on GCC military
interoperability, particularly in command and control, air defense and
counter-insurgency.
Officials said all six GCC states would participate in the exercise,
scheduled to end on May 19. They said the exercise took more than a year to
plan and would mark one of the largest combined maneuvers in the Gulf.
