Officials said the Federal Supreme Court has sentenced five UAE nationals and an Afghan convicted of funding Taliban. They said the defendants also planned to establish a network to enforce Al Qaida doctrine in the UAE.

"The ruling, the first against Emirati terror suspects, is final," the Abu Dhabi-based Gulf News reported on April 28.

The court, presided over by Chief Justice Falah Al Hajiri, passed sentences of up to four years on the defendants. Officials said the men were arrested in Khor Fakkan in October 2008.

The defendants were identified as Rashid Daoud and Abdullah Hassan, both sentenced to three years. The others were Rashid Suleiman Al Naqbi, Bader Al Mansouri, Marwan Al Naqbi, all UAE nationals. The Afghan was identified as Abdul Gulam.

The court acquitted two other defendants, Saleh Al Naqbi and Yaacoub Al Mansouri. All of the defendants said they had been pressured into signing confessions.

Prosecutors said Daoud, sentenced to four years, sought to enforce Salafist doctrine in the UAE. In one case, Daoud assaulted a foreign laborer for telephoning a woman.

Another two defendants were said to have prepared military training of Salafist operatives in the UAE. The defendants were said to have downloaded military training videos and screened them to other members of the alleged network.
