Obama, Egypt strategizing for nuke-free Israel
WASHINGTON — Egypt and the United States have sought to draft a
joint proposal for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons.

Officials and analysts said President Barack Obama has approved efforts
of a joint resolution as a means of pressuring Israel to give up its
purported nuclear arsenal. They said the resolution was not meant against
Iran, which has denied a nuclear weapons program.
"The president is not happy with Israel's nuclear capabilities," former
U.S. envoy to the United Nations, John Bolton, said. "I think he would be
delighted if Israel gave up its nuclear weapons."

In an interview on May 4 on Israel Army radio, Bolton said Obama's
predecessor, George Bush, refused to work with Egypt or any other country
for a so-called nuclear-free Middle East. Israel has refused to confirm or
deny reports that it possesses nuclear weapons.
"Egypt and the Obama administration are negotiating right now on an
Egyptian proposal for a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East, which
certainly sounds good," Bolton, who served as Bush's leading
nonproliferation official, said. "Except when you think about it, there is
only one country that resolution is targeted at and that is Israel."
"When I was in the Bush administration we refused to even talk about
these kinds of ideas," Bolton said. "I'd be quite worried about the possible
outcome there."
Over the last 40 years, the United States has unofficially adopted
Israel's refusal to discuss its purported nuclear arsenal. Israel has
refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty until peace comes to
the Middle East.
The United Nations has hosted a month-long meeting on NPT. The session
has been dominated by Egypt's recruitment of a bloc to press for the
implementation of a 1995 resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East.
"We want to see every country be a signatory to the NPT," Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton said on May 3. "We believe strongly in this. That’s
why we are taking steps which have never been taken by any administration
before."
Israel has become the focus of attention at the NPT meeting, sponsored
by the International Atomic Energy Agency. IAEA director-general Yukiya
Amano has asked member-states to propose ways to press Israel to join NPT.
"It would be helpful to me if Your Excellency could inform me of any
views that your government might have with respect to meeting the objectives
of the resolution," Amano said in an April 7 letter addressed to the foreign
ministers of the 151 member states.
On May 5, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States called
for a nuclear-free Middle East. The five nuclear powers, without mentioning
Israel, called on all states in the region to sign the NPT.
"We urge those states that are not parties to the treaty to accede as
non-nuclear-weapon states and pending accession to the NPT, to adhere to its
terms," a statement by the five powers said.
Bolton did not rule out a U.S. campaign against Israel's purported
nuclear weapons arsenal. He said the next few months could see an increase
in U.S. and other international pressure on the Jewish state.
"The only unknown answer at this point is exactly how much pressure he
[Obama] would exert on Israel to do just that," Bolton said. "Part of that
pressure is being exerted right now by even considering the possibility of a
conference on a nuclear-weapons-free Middle East."

It seems that Israel's right-wing government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, has never heard of the adage "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones". Israel refuses to admit the existence of its nuclear weapons programme or its massive nuclear arsenal, yet threatens to destroy the nuclear facilities of an NPT signatory that does open its doors to IAEA inspection and monitoring.

Many of us have Obama's mindset figured out regarding Israel. It would have been useful for the L.A. Times to release the video of Obama's toast to Radhid Khalidi so that others could get an idea of his Reverend Wright induced, anti-Semite ideology.

Obama and Clinton should be tried for treason with regards to our nuclear policy. It is apparent they are siding with dictators against our longstanding allies. They are a danger to every peace-loving American.

Yes! It's about time!
Everyone is screaming about the elimination of a single "race", but with nukes in the hands of Israel, anybody with any common sense knows that Israel would use their nuclear weapons as a pre-emptive strike and totally eliminate the entire human race.

Move aside Obama. You're a little boy trying to do the job of a grownup. Get out of the way. Let someone more qualified than you take over. You've wasted enough of our time & resources.

So let me get this straight... MaObama gives Iran a pass, and lets them develop weapons that they already have threatened to use against Israel with the intent of eliminating an entire ethnicity, as well as giving N. Korea a pass; but are now going to 'demand' Israel give them up? Bwahahahahaha!

Asking Israel to give up there nukes while allowing Iran to make them is beyond absurd. Once again this administration are the laughing stock of the world are they for real?

The analysis of the situation in the Middle East is clear. Without a nuclear deterrent Israel would not be around. Freedom and Liberty is unknown in the middle East except for in Israel, I vote to keep them around as long as the USA is around!

Obama is insane. I mean, it seems as though, every decision he makes is the worst possible. Betray old allies, betray your own people, appease people who want your people dead and would slit their throats en masse if given the chance. Can you say 'one term president'?

If Israel gives up her nuclear arsenal, she's committing suicide.

The only thing holding the Middle East from igniting into a true holocaust has been the threat of the (wink wink) alleged nuclear arsenal that Israel does possess. They are not suicide bombers and have no need to hasten their meeting with their collective maker.

The second Israel gives up its nuclear deterrence capability, it will be more vulnerable than ever to attack by its hateful Arab neighboring states - every idiot can see that. Unless Obama is a sub-idiot, this is exactly his intention.
There is just no way Israel will give up its nuclear arsenal. Obama must know this and that all it's going to lead to is worse relations between the U.S. and Israel.

"Israel should give some of its nukes to Iran to achieve a balance in the Middle East".
Absolutely, they should deliver them via airmail.
"But only if Iran pledges not to wipe Israel off the map."
HA-HA-HA! Iranians keeping their word! HA-HA-HA!

Israel's nuclear arsenal, not US support, is all that has prevented devastating attacks on its otherwise undefendable major cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa. Even a US "umbrella" would not make Damascus or Beirut, and possibly other major cities, safe from retaliatory destruction. An Iranian nuclear capability would change the balance, because Iran probably doesn't care about Damascus or Beirut. It would be insanity, and probably suicidal, for Israel to trade its nuclear capability for a "commitment to Israel's security" from Barack Obama, or to appease its UN critics, neither of which would prevent Israel's destruction.

Bolton's new job is right-wing spin doctor for Fox News; however, in this case, I hope the spin coincides with reality. The world will not survive another 50 years with nuclear arms in the Middle East. Israel must take this bold step for the future of humanity.
