Egypt, Israel discuss joint Sinai solar project

TEL AVIV — Egypt and Israel are examining a proposed solar energy project.

Officials said the two Middle East neighbors were discussing the formation of a joint solar project in Egypt's Sinai Desert, Middle East Newsline reported.

They said the project would provide electricity to both countries and help develop the Egyptian peninsula.

"Egypt has the requisite space and Israel would contribute its technological knowhow," Israeli Industry Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said.

"In our discussions with President Mubarak, he expressed much interest in the idea and we will be working together with Egyptian government representatives to advance the idea."

Egypt has not confirmed the proposal for a joint solar energy project.

Officials said Israel and Jordan have agreed to establish a bio-diesel plant along their border by 2011.
