Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb expanding from North Africa to Europe
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's nominee to be the next commander of U.S. Africa Command has deemed Al Qaida Organization in the Islamic Maghreb one of the two leading threats in Africa.
U.S. Gen. Carter Ham told the Senate Armed Services Committee that "Al Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb [AQIM] is seeking to expand its operational reach and increase attacks within its current area of operations."
