Growing instability, Islamist threat in nuclear Pakistan alarms West

Recent violence in Karachi is putting new strains on Pakistan's coalition government, raising new fears among U.S. and Western intelligence agencies about an Islamist takeover of the nuclear-armed Southwest Asian state. Tensions are growing between government coalition partners, the Pashtun-based Awami National Party (ANP) and the Urdu-speaking Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).
