U.S. intelligence sources said growing instability in Pakistan is threatening to undermine U.S. relations with a key Southwest Asian ally needed for conducting the war in Afghanistan and other counterterrorism operations. The sources said recent events in Pakistan combined with the weakness of the civilian government have emboldened the younger generation of officers within the military, many of whom are radical Muslims.
