Administration warns against China monopoly on rare earth minerals

Rare earth minerals, needed for dozens of high-technology developments, are in short supply and China controls up to 95 percent of the sources of the minerals, an Energy official told Congress last week. David Sandalow, assistant energy secretary for policy and international affairs, told the Senate energy subcommittee that the problem is serious.
