Saudi crown prince and defense minister is out of the loop

WASHINGTON — Despite his return after nearly two years of treatment, Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz has been left out of the circle of decision-makers in Saudi Arabia. A report by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said Sultan, who is also defense minister, has been marginalized by the Saudi royal family. The report by analyst Simon Henderson asserted that the 84-year-old Sultan, the official successor to King Abdullah, appeared to be suffering from dementia and was no longer involved in high-level consultations.
