The U.S. military, as part of its effort to limit civilian casualties, has vastly increased the use of special operations forces in Afghanistan that are operating largely in the shadows.
U.S. officials said scores or hundreds of special operations missions have been successful in the past six months in killing or capturing key Taliban insurgents, including numerous leaders.
