Syria sees opening from Washington to intervene in Iraq

NICOSIA — Syria has decided to escalate efforts to influence any new government in neighboring Iraq. The regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad has established a panel to examine options to influence the next Baghdad government. Officials said Assad has sought to make Iraq part of the sphere of influence of Syria and its ally Iran.
