Japanese Prime Minister Yuko Hatoyama last week relented on his party's campaign pledge to move the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma off the island of Okinawa, citing national security concerns.
On May 4, Hatoyama said that some Futenma functions would be relocated within Okinawa. However, Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima said in statements to the press that the "danger" of Futenma and the "growing voices" were calling for relocation outside Okinawa.
