China opposes U.S. on new economic sanctions against Iran

Special From East-Asia-Intel.com

China announced last week that it is prepared to thwart the Obama administration’s plan to seek harsh United Nations economic sanctions against Iran for its refusal to abide by international controls on its uranium enrichment program.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters Jan. 7 that “we hope the parties involved will not drop diplomatic efforts, but adopt more flexible policies to seek a proper resolution of the issue.”

A day earlier, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Yesui, who chairs the UN Security Council this month, said China opposes sanctions.

“China always advocates resolution of the Iran nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations, and we believe sanctions are not the way to solve the root issues," he said.

Zhang said earlier that it was too soon to consider new sanctions against Iran.

Senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have said Iran will face “crippling” sanctions for its continued refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

A new Iranian uranium enrichment facility was disclosed in September at Qom, undermining repeated Teheran denials that its nuclear program was peaceful in nature. The Qom facility is situated at a military base. Specialists assess it to be suitable only for enriching uranium for weapons.
