A suspected Al Qaida operative rammed a truck full of explosives into a Gendarmerie facility in Algeria. At least nine people, four of them paramilitary officers, were killed in the bombing in Timizar, about 100 kilometers east of Algiers.

Security sources said the June 11 bombing was the first successful suicide strike by the Al Qaida Organization in the Islamic Maghreb.

They said the attack came amid a series of AQIM attempts in the Kabilye province, regarded as a stronghold for the Sunni insurgency network.

The suicide truck struck the barracks of an elite Algerian security unit. The Gendarmerie unit was said to have led several operations against AQIM in Kabilye.

Hours earlier, two suspected AQIM operatives were killed and another was captured in Rafur, also east of Algiers. The sources said Algerian security forces raided a suspected insurgency hideout.
