Algerian troops pose threat to Moroccan dates near Figig

CAIRO — Security sources said Algerian forces have been crossing the border into Moroccan territory. They said Algerian units infiltrated the eastern border of Morocco several times over the last three months.

The sources said Algerian troops were raiding Moroccan orchards and stealing dates and other fruit. They said the latest infiltration, which has sparked an investigation by Rabat, was reported in the area of Figig around Sept. 10.

"These acts are becoming increasingly provocative," a security source said.

Morocco has sought to coordinate with the Algerian military to prevent infiltration. The sources said Algeria, which has disputed Morocco's control of most of Western Sahara, has rejected formal mechanisms for military or security coordination.

At this point, the Algerian infiltrations have not resulted in any injuries or clashes with Moroccan military forces. The sources said Morocco has reinforced military and security units along some areas of the Algerian border.

But the sources said Morocco has been concerned that Algeria might have decided to escalate tension. They said Algeria was believed to have engineered a series of attacks in Morocco in the 1990s.

In September, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry relayed a formal request to Algeria to coordinate security along their mutual border. The North African kingdom has also appealed to Algeria to agree to a process of normalization.

Argaz you don`t know enything. Didn`t you know that the western part ot today Algeria belonged to Morocco, but the French changed the border when they granted Morocco independence back in 1956. The Algerian agreed to give it back to Morocco but then changed there minds and wouldn`t do that, claming the borders to be permanent. We helped you a lot during your struggle for freedom and this is how you thank us. Read the history book next time. You occupied parts of the land belonging to Figig tribes.

Morocco had made a mistake by invading the Algerian territories after the independence of Algeria from France. That was referred to as "the war of sands". It created a lot of tension between the two parties, moreover, Morocco took control of the Saharian terretories after Spain departed from the Western Sahara. Morocco, being a neighboring country to Algeria that has previously threatened Algeria's terretory, Algeria has to formally oppose the Moroccan occupation of the western Sahara because it poses a more serious thread with the lengthened border through the Algerian desert.
