U.S. rushes to ship last 2,200 Humvees to Iraq by early 2010
WASHINGTON — The United States has accelerated delivery of thousands
of Humvee combat vehicles to Iraq after the program fell behind schedule.
The Defense Department has awarded contracts to supply 8,500 Humvee
vehicles to the Iraq Army. The Pentagon program has been more than a year
behind schedule amid the U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq.
On July 7, the Pentagon awarded a $28.3 million contract to AECOM
Government Services, based in Fort Worth, Texas, Middle East Newsline reported. Under the contract, AECOM
would maintain and repair the final 2,200 M1114 up-armored vehicles for
transfer to the Iraq Army.

Officials said the Humvees were taken from the U.S. military,
up-armored, repaired and overhaul before they were sent to Iraq. They said
the project was expected to end by February 2010.
The Pentagon said the Humvee overhaul contract was taking place in Iraq
with some 500 Iraqi personnel. AECOM was said to have been the only company
that submitted a bid.
