Security sources said the Yemeni Interior Ministry has ordered the reinforcement of troops around the U.S. embassy in Sanaa.

The sources said the ministry has informed the U.S. embassy of an imminent strike by Al Qaida.

"Security forces were bolstered as a preventive measure," an Interior Ministry statement said on July 13.

The sources said Al Qaida was planning major strikes against U.S. embassies in several Arab League states. They cited threats against the U.S. embassies in Algeria and Yemen.

Al Qaida has targeted the U.S. embassy in Sanaa several times since 2007.

In one attack, Al Qaida operatives fired a mortar toward the heavily-guarded compound. The mortar missed and landed in a nearby school, killing a student.

Yemen has been under pressure from Saudi Arabia and the United States to crack down on the growing Al Qaida presence. In July, a Yemeni court sentenced six Al Qaida operatives to death in connection with a series of attacks in 2008.
