Major Gaza clan immobilized by split between Hamas, Al Qaida loyalists
GAZA CITY — A powerful Palestinian clan, known for its organized crime activities, has been torn by divided loyalties to insurgency groups.
Palestinian sources said the Dughmoush clan has become split between
pro-Al Qaida and pro-Hamas elements. They said the division has led to
tension regarding business interests.
"Factions are being formed, and the clan no longer works as a unit," a
Palestinian source said.
On Oct. 10, Dughmush clan members engaged in a battle in Gaza City, Middle East Newsline reported. At
least seven people were injured, including a senior clan member, when
factions fought with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and light weapons
fire.
Hamas sent police and security forces to Dughmoush headquarters, located
in the Sabra district of Gaza City, The sources said Hamas police did not
intervene in the two-hour battle, but an ambulance evacuated the wounded.
The sources said the divisions within Dughmoush have been the result of
Hamas efforts to neutralize clan warlord Mumtaz Dughmoush. They said Mumtaz,
head of the Army of Islam militia and a former Palestinian Authority
security officer, was challenged by other clan members linked to Hamas
security forces.
The Dughmoush clan was identified as one of the largest and most
aggressive in the
Gaza Strip. The clan was said to have been heavily involved in extortion,
drug and weapons trafficking as well as other criminal activity.
In January 2009, Dughmoush fighters loyal to the Fatah movement were
said to have helped Israel in the invasion of the Gaza Strip. The sources
said several Dughmoush clan members were later executed by Hamas squads.
