Syria set to double fuel imports as domestic production drops
NICOSIA Ñ Syria plans to double its import of gas fuel.
Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Al Alao said the government would increase
the import of gas fuel to 2.5 million metric tons in 2010.
Al Alao cited a
forecast of increased Syrian consumption of fuel from six million to 6.5
million tons next year.

Al Alao said fuel stocks in Syria were declining. He said gas fuel
consumption fell from seven million tons in 2007 to 5.5 million tons a year
later. The minister cited the slashing of subsidies on gas oil.
Syria has been increasing energy imports amid the steady drop in
domestic production. Western and Russian contractors have been searching for
crude oil and natural gas in Syria.
