NICOSIA — Syria plans to double its import of gas fuel.

Al Alao cited a forecast of increased Syrian consumption of fuel from six million to 6.5 million tons next year.

Al Alao said fuel stocks in Syria were declining. He said gas fuel consumption fell from seven million tons in 2007 to 5.5 million tons a year later. The minister cited the slashing of subsidies on gas oil.

Syria has been increasing energy imports amid the steady drop in domestic production. Western and Russian contractors have been searching for crude oil and natural gas in Syria.
