Iran offers to be alternative to Russia as gas source to Europe

NICOSIA — Iran has offered to supply natural gas to Europe.   

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari said Teheran was ready to serve as an alternative supplier to Russia.

Safari said Switzerland has become the first client of Iran.

"Iran is ready to discuss not just supply but also security," Safari said on Jan. 27. "If the West asks for sustainable energy, Iran is available to talk."

Europe has been recovering from a gas shortage sparked by a dispute between Russian and Ukranian energy suppliers.

Iran has proposed that any gas supply be directed through a pipeline that begins in Turkey.
