Bahrain cracks down on illegal immigration

ABU DHABI Ñ Bahrain's interior ministry has directed to track and deport illegal migrants to the sheikdom.   

Officials said thousands of south Asians, particularly from Bangladesh and Pakistan, were infiltrating Bahrain and flooding the job market.

"The crackdown follows direct instructions from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa," Labor Minister Majid Al Alawi said on Nov. 26.

The ministry has established a police unit to track and arrest illegal residents. Officials said 100 officers have been assigned and would to coordinate with the Labor Ministry.

Al Alawi said the new police unit would also battle human trafficking rings. He said the ministry plans to establish detention centers for illegal laborers.
