EU wind project to help power Hebron hospital

RAMALLAH Ñ The European Union has agreed to finance a renewable energy production facility in the Palestinian Authority.   

The European Commission has signed an agreement with a Palestinian hospital in the West Bank to help assemble a wind energy production system.

Officials said the wind turbine at Hebron's Al Ahli Hospital would produce up to 700 kilowatts of electricity and fulfill more than 40 percent of the energy needs of the medical facility.

Officials said the EU would provide 1.3 million euro, or 80 percent of the cost of the wind turbine, Middle East Newsline reported. They said Al Ahli would be the first Palestinian institution in the West Bank to use renewableg energy.

The EU has also agreed to finance a study for wind energy projects throughout the West Bank. Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank and located on a mountain, has been deemed as suited for wind energy.
