Obama administration cites Mao, praises China's 'historical accomplishment' at 60

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton displayed the Obama administrationÕs pro-China inclination during her congratulations offered on that country's 60 anniversary. She offered Òwarm wishes and congratulationsÓ to China, which also celebrated its 30th anniversary of official ties with the United States this year.
ÒIn the last 30 years, China has undergone an extraordinary economic transformation, lifting millions of people out of poverty. This is truly an historic accomplishment," Clinton said.
She renewed pledges by the Obama administration to seek a "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship" with China.
Clinton set the tone for the administrationÕs pro-China policies earlier this year when she visited Beijing and said the United States would not seek to promote human rights in China, which had angered BeijingÕs communist leaders in the past.
Robert Hormats, undersecretary of state for economic, energy and agricultural affairs, invoked Chinese dictator Mao Zedong during a September 28 gala at the Chinese embassy in Washington.
Mao is regarded as one of the worst mass murderers in history, blamed for the deaths of 60 million people under communist rule in China.
In China, however, Mao is still revered and is only partially blamed for ÒmistakesÓ during his rule. __ Full Text, Subscribers
