U.S. Navy expands facilities in Bahrain

ABU DHABI — Navy officials said the U.S. military is implementing the planned expansion of facilities and services at its base in Mina Salman outside Manama.

They said the navy would finance the construction of a road to connect the base to other areas of Bahrain.

"The whole project would cost between $40 million and $70 million and construction would begin in the next six months," Naval Support Authority Public Works director Lt. Cmdr. Dan Grippo said.

Under the project, the road would connect Mina Salman to Juffair and serve navy personnel. Grippo said construction would begin when other elements of naval expansion were completed, Middle East Newsline reported.

The navy has also been constructing a base at the Sheik Khalifa port in Manama. The base was expected to contain APM Terminals.

The U.S. Navy maintains a 66-acre base in Juffair, said to be worth $580 million. The facility contains 2,500 personnel.

"If this facility were to be rebuilt from scratch today, it would cost that much considering the state-of-the-art and modern facilities we have in there," Grippo said.
