Turkey used U.S. intel to hunt Kurdish insurgents

ANKARA — Turkey sharpened its military campaign against the Kurdish Workers Party with help from U.S. intelligence.

Officials said a joint Turkish-U.S. intelligence facility has been relaying data to Ankara on PKK movements along the Iraqi-Turkish border, Middle East Newsline reported. They said the U.S. intelligence has improved Turkey's response time as well as enhanced the search for PKK fighters.

"We are using U.S. air and satellite intelligence to track terrorist movements both in northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey," an official said.

In late November, about 30 PKK operatives were said to have been killed in a series of Turkish military operations along the Iraqi border. On Nov. 24, two PKK fighters were killed in the Turkish province of Agri.

Officials said the military and Gendarmerie have been conducting a major search-and-destroy operation in the mountains of Agri.

They said the combined Turkish force was seeking a PKK cell responsible for an ambush in mid-November in which a Turkish Army major was killed and four others were injured.
