ANKARA — Turkey has participated in a major NATO air exercise.
The Turkish Air Force contributed aircraft in a NATO airborne
early-warning and alert exercise in the United States, Middle East Newsline reported. The exercise took
place in August 2008 and included 15 European and North American air forces.
"Our sole purpose is to be the eyes for the aircraft so they can be
forewarned if another aircraft is in their vicinity — friend or foe,"
Turkish Air Force pilot Capt. Gurhan Tarman said.
Tarman served as co-pilot for the E-3A AEW aircraft during the exercise,
based in the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. The Sentinel
aircraft, based in Geilenkirchen, Germany, directed mock dogfights of
U.S.-origin F-15 fighter-jets in an effort to improve interoperability among
NATO air forces.

"The integration of our two systems is integral in our missions, and the
more we are able to take from each occasion that we work together, the
better we are able to execute our missions with precision," Capt. Nicholas
Suppa, assistant director of staff of the U.S. Air Force's 335th Fighter
Squadron, said.
