An explosion near the U.S. embassy killed a Yemeni guard in San'a, a Yemeni official said. Other guards and schoolchildren were also wounded.
The Interior Ministry official said unknown attackers fired a mortar at a high school next to the American embassy in downtown San'a Sawan district. He said three guards and three children were wounded.
The U.S. embassy declined comment as did school offials.

Earlier this month, Yemen foiled an attempted attack by Al Qaida on a key oil facility.
Security sources said Yemeni forces blocked an Al Qaida bombing of an oil pipeline in the Maarib province on Feb. 23. The sources said Sanaa was informed in advance of the bombing plot and fought five suspected Al Qaida assailants.
Yemeni officers and the assailants engaged in a shootout, and two of the insurgents were injured and the rest were arrested. The sources said one of the detainees was believed to have been involved in the abduction of Italian nationals in 2006.
The sources said Yemen has been preparing for an Al Qaida strike on energy facilities. They said Al Qaida has recruited tribesmen to help facilitate attacks on foreign energy companies.
