BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Interior Ministry said Al Qaida has been recruiting teenagers
for suicide bombings in northern Iraq.
The ministry said the focus of Al
Qaida recruitment was in Mosul, the leading stronghold of the Sunni
insurgency group.
Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf said security forces
have captured six teenagers trained as suicide bombers, Middle East Newsline reported. Khalaf said the boys
were ages 14 through 16 and trained by a Saudi commander of Al Qaida.

The disclosure on Monday came during an Iraqi operation against Al Qaida
in Mosul. The ministry has reported the arrest of more than 1,200 suspected
Al Qaida operatives in the northern city, the third largest in Iraq.
Officials said Al Qaida has been recruiting children as young as eight
for suicide missions. They said Al Qaida has also established a unit to
recruit and train women suicide bombers.
