Top Gaza clan split between Hamas, Fatah

GAZA CITY — The leading opposition clan in the Gaza Strip is badly split over policy toward the Hamas regime.

The Dughmoush clan has been divided over whether to reconcile with the Hamas regime. Palestinian sources said the traditional leadership has appealed for cooperation with Hamas while the younger members have supported the opposition Fatah movement.

On Jan. 12, a leading member of Dughmush was found shot to death, Middle East Newsline reported. Shaaban Dughmoush was killed and his body was found in the southern Gaza City neighborhood of Sabra.

Palestinian sources said Dughmush worked in the Naval Police Department. They said he was shot in the head in what appeared to be an execution.

Shaaban was identified as the brother of Zakaria Dughmoush. Zakaria has been the commander of the Salah Eddin Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees.

PRC has been a leading militia in the war against Israel. The militia was established by Mumtaz Dughmoush, who has taken over most of the clan and steered members toward an alliance with Fatah.

The killing of Shaaban was said to have been part of a Fatah-directed campaign against the Hamas regime. Hours after Shaaban's body was found, a bomb blast injured several Hamas police officers in the central Gaza Strip.

Palestinian sources said the improvised explosive device was detonated by remote control as a Hamas police patrol drove by east of the Nusseirat refugee camp. The Dughmoush clan was said to have been instrumental in IED attacks against the Islamic regime.
