MOU with Iran sees Turkey developing gas fields in South Pars
NICOSIA — Iran and Turkey have signed an agreement to cooperate on
natural gas production and exports.
On Nov. 17, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding that
would launch several joint ventures.
One project envisioned Turkish
operation of three gas fields in Iran's huge South Pars. The gas would then
be exported to Europe via Turkey, Middle East Newsline reported.
"We are making a contribution to the security of energy supply, which is
a very important issue," Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said. "Both
Turkey and Europe need natural gas."

Under the MoU, Turkey would develop three phases of South Pars and
produce up to 46 million cubic meters of gas per day.
Officials said the two
countries would also plan the construction of a 1,850-kilometer pipeline
from the Iranian port of Assaluyeh to Turkey.
