Kuwaitis believe refinery fires could be sabotage

ABU DHABI — Kuwaiti security officials are investigating a spate of fires at the sheikdom's refineries for evidence of sabotage.

Security sources said the fires have erupted at an alarming rate at Kuwait's three oil refineries.

The sources said the fires could be the work of foreign rivals as well as Kuwaitis who sought to torpedo the construction of a fourth oil refinery.

Mohammed Al Hamlan, deputy chairman of the union at the state-owned Kuwait National Petroleum Co., said the sheikdom's refineries were aging and neglected. Al Hamlan has urged Oil Minister Mohammed Al Olaim to order urgent repair and maintenance.

"The minister has been postponing the meeting for over two months even though so many critical issues needed to be discussed," Al Hamlan said.

The Oil Ministry has not raised the prospect that the refinery fires were the work of arsonists. Instead, both the ministry and KNPC asserted that the fires were the result of human or technical error.
