Iraq conducts oil exploration for first time since 1980s

BAGHDAD — After more than 20 years, Iraq has resumed crude oil exploration.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said oil exploration would take place beginning on Aug. 8 in the Gharraf field in Nasseriya. The ministry said the search would be conducted by teams of engineers, geologists and geophysicists, Middle East Newsline reported. "These three teams are part of a group the oil ministry formed to renew exploration activity in order to change the unconfirmed reserves to confirmed ones," ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said.

This marked the first time that Iraq, with proven reserves of 115 billion barrels of oil, would explore for energy since the 1980s. Officials said the first team would conduct seismic tests at Gharraf.
