U.S. planning space theme parks in Gulf region

ABU DHABI — The United States is planning the development of space centers in the Middle East.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center has been working with entities in the Gulf and North Africa for the establishment of space centers. The centers were meant to attract tourists interested in space and aviation.

Organizers said the first space center would be established in the United Arab Emirates. The Dubai-based Space Investment Co. has signed an agreement with the UAE's Ras Al Khaimah government to build a $100 million space center in the emirate. The center was expected to eventually attract one million visitors per year.

"This is the first project of its kind in the region and will give a major boost to tourism in Ras Al Khaimah," an SIC spokesperson said.

The 1.72 million square foot center would consist of a theme park named SpaceWorld UAE. The park was designed to contain a space camp, aviation camp, robotics center and survival camp. The facility would also include a space mall and hotel.

SIC was selected as a partner of the Space and Rocket Center. Executives said the U.S. entity plans to operate two more space tourist facilities in North Africa and South Asia.

"We have selected Ras Al Khaimah due to its location as a promising family destination in the Middle East," SIC chairman Gazi Al Ebrahim said.

SIC has employed NASA programs to operate space parks. The parks provide visitors with simulations of space travel.

"With easy access through three airports in Dubai, Sharjah and RAK, we expect SpaceWorld to attract a million visitors from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and South East Asia in the fifth year," Al Ebrahim said.
