ABU DHABI — Qatar plans to develop and install a command and control system to monitor crime and terrorism.
Officials said the Gulf Cooperation Council emirate has drafted a program to procure and install hundreds of surveillance cameras to monitor vital urban areas. They said the project would begin in the Qatari capital of Doha and monitor people and vehicles.
Qatar has sought to enhance security to foil threats by Al Qaida and Iran. Doha has been negotiating with Western defense majors in projects to protect strategic sites, particularly natural gas facilities.
"These cameras will help us monitor the roads more effectively," Brig. Gen. Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, a senior police official, said.
Under the plan, the cameras would be linked to a command and control center operated by the police. The C2 facility would enable police and security forces to respond quickly to emergencies.
