Saudis now an advocate for nuclear energy over solar, wind alternatives
ABU DHABI — Saudi Arabia has been promoting the development of
nuclear energy for Gulf Cooperation Council states.
Saudi officials have asserted that nuclear power was the best option to
meet the growing energy demands of GCC states. The officials warned against
relying on other renewable energy options, such as solar or wind power.
"Renewable energies are [playing] only a very small part in supplying
even those who started [developing them] a long time ago," Saudi Electricity
Co. president Ali Saleh Al Barrack said.

Al Barrack told a conference in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai
that nuclear energy, endorsed by the GCC in December 2006, was the best
option to avoid an energy shortage in the six GCC states. He said Riyad
has determined that wind and solar energy were not feasible alternatives.
"I think the only immediate solution is nuclear energy," Al Barrack
said.
