58-year-old hacker suspected of selling tech data globally via Internet for a decade

ATHENS — Greece has captured a man suspected of selling advanced Western technology to Middle East and other states.

Officials said Greek police arrested a mathematician who hacked into the computer system of France's Dassault Group. They said the suspect, detained on Jan. 25, was believed to have acquired weapons technology data and sold them to a range of countries, including some in the Middle East.

Dassault produces military aircraft, including the Rafale fighter-jet. The company has sought to sell Rafale to Greece, Libya, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, Middle East Newsline reported.

The 58-year-old suspect, who was not named, was said to have been stealing secrets from Dassault for nearly a decade. Officials said Dassault has determined that technology and data were sold over the Internet to at least 250 people, including those in Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and South Africa.

Officials said several Middle East states were also among the buyers of the data on Dassault. The countries were not identified.

Dassault relayed an alert of the suspect to several countries. Officials said the suspect was traced to Greece after he caused Dassault more than $360 million worth of damages.
