CAIRO — Tunisia has acquired 500 solar systems to generate electricity for rural areas.

Japan's Kyocera Corp. has won a contract to supply and install solar power generating systems in Tunisia.

The contract, awarded on Feb. 13, called for the supply of solar storage batteries to absorb energy during the day and generate power at night. Industry sources said Kyocera would begin to install the systems in the Tunisian districts of Beja, Kef and Sillina in April 2008. The effort would be funded by the Japanese government, Middle East Newsline reported.

Tunisia has one of the smallest energy reserves in North Africa. Other North African countries have also been examining the prospect of solar power.
