EU, N. Africa Conclude Naval Exercise
ALGIERS — The European Union and North Africa have concluded a
major naval exercise in the Mediterranean.
The navies of 10 Mediterranean states began an exercise on Oct. 20. The
10-day exercise was the first based in an organized by Algeria.
"The first part of the execises, led by Algeria, will be held in the
Algiers port," Algerian Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Suleiman Defairi said. "The
second part will be held in Italy."
The exercise was sponsored by the so-called 5+5 group. The group
consists of five North African states -- Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco
and Tunisia -- as well as five EU states. The EU states were identified as
France, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain.

Mauritania, however, did not participate in the exercise. The North
African state, rocked by a coup in August 2008, has been shunned by the EU
and United States.
Officials said the exercise focused on interoperability and maritime
security skills. They said this included operations to foil insurgency
strikes and the flow of illegal immigrants from North Africa to Europe.
