U.S. official: Sanctions
hurting Iran

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration has determined that Iran was harmed by United Nations sanctions.

Officials said many countries have responded to the UN Security Council decision in December 2006 to impose sanctions on Iran. They said trade with Iran has already been reduced.

"There is no doubt that the cumulative effect of this is having a major impact on the Iranian financial sector, is having a major impact on investments in Iran and is having a major impact on the Iranian hydrocarbon sector," Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs James Jeffrey said.

In a briefing on March 27, Jeffrey said the UN sanctions, which include a ban on Iranian weapons exports, have sparked domestic criticism of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Officials said another batch of sanctions were expected to be imposed on Iran by June 2007.
