Six U.S. movie studios filed a lawsuit in Shanghai aimed at curbing rampant sales of pirated U.S. films in China.

arner Home Video reportedly released "Superman Returns" on DVD in China — months before the planned release in the U.S. to combat rampant piracy in China.
The studios filed suit in December against a Shanghai audio-video production company for allegedly selling illegally copied versions of 21 movies.

The Shanghai Municipal Second Intermediate People's Court recently made a preliminary ruling in favor the U.S. companies, which include Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios.

The court ordered the Shanghai company, which was not identified in official Chinese press reports, to pay $20,000 plus a fine of $6,000. The companies had sought $189,000 in damages.

The case illustrates that rampant piracy of U.S. intellectual property remains a major problem in China.
