Help wanted: Unmarried women for Palestinian security jobs

RAMALLAH — The Palestinian Authority has launched a drive to recruit women for the security forces.

The PA has broadcast announcements on Palestinian television for women to join the police. Women officers must be at least 24 years old, unmarried and elementary school graduates.

Officials said the PA plans to recruit hundreds of women for its security agencies, Middle East Newsline reported. They said the first step would be to expand the women's unit of the PA police.

"We need women mostly for administration positions," an official said.

Currently, PA police contain 215 women officers. The women officers, under the command of the Women's Department, serve in a range of units.

Nablus police director Ahmad Sharqawi said women university graduates would not be accepted into the force. Sharqawi said the recruits must be prepared to serve in the police for at least five years.
