BELARUS MOVES TO DEVELOP IRAN'S OIL SECTOR NICOSIA — Iran, acting ahead of what could be a Western boycott, has invited republics from the former Soviet Union to develop the energy sector of the Middle East state.

Teheran has reached agreement with Belarus to develop Iran's crude oil sector. On Wednesday, the two countries signed an accord under which Belarus would explore and develop and oil field in southwestern Iran near the Iraqi border.

Officials said the agreement, valued at $450 million, stipulated cooperation by Iranian and Belarus teams in the development of the Jofeireh oil field, 80 kilometers from Ahvaz in the Arab-populated province of Khuzestan. Khuzestan, plagued by Arab and Kurdish separatism, was believed to contain the majority of Iran's oil reserves.

The two-stage agreement was signed amid U.S. pressure on Western companies not to enter Iran's energy sector. The U.S. Congress has drafted legislation that called for sanctions on any company that helps Iran's energy development and production.
