LONDON — Turkey and a leading Western energy contractor plan to
cooperate to compete for an energy project in Iraq.
The state-owned Turkish Petroleum Inc. Royal Dutch Shell have
established a consortium to win a natural gas production license in Iraq, Middle East Newsline reported.
The two sides would also offer to build a pipeline to the Turkish port of
Ceyhan along the Mediterranean.
Turkey has long sought to gain access to crude oil and natural gas
reserves in northern Iraq. So far, several Western companies have been
awarded projects in the autonomous Iraqi region of Kurdistan. More than 600
Turkish firms work in northern Iraq.
TPI and Shell also plan to build a gas pipeline parallel to the oil
pipeline from Iraq's Kirkuk to Ceyhan. On March 9, Iraq, Turkey and the
United States met in Istanbul to discuss gas production and transport.
