INSURGENTS INFILTRATE BAGHDAD'S GREEN ZONE
BAGHDAD — After years of efforts, Sunni insurgents have succeeded in
penetrating Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.
Officials said Sunni insurgents, aided by Iraqi employees, entered the
Green Zone and blew up the cafeteria in parliament. Three out of the eight
people killed in the suicide bombing on Thursday were parliamentarians.
"Regardless of the numbers of those who have been unfortunately killed
or injured, this does reflect the gravity of the problems that Iraq is
facing," former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Alawi said.
Officials said the likelihood was that an aide or bodyguard to a Sunni
parliamentarian facilitated the entry of the suicide bomber. Over the last
two years, aides to several Sunni and Shi'ite parliamentarians were arrested
and identified as insurgents aligned to either the former Saddam Hussein
regime or Iran.
"The investigations are ongoing inside the parliament," parliamentarian
Hasan Senaid, a Shi'ite, said. "So far, three workers from the cafeteria
have been detained."
On Friday, parliament scheduled an emergency session in the Green Zone.
Few parliamentarians, however, attended the session, held on the Muslim
Sabbath.
The last bombing in the Green Zone was in 2004 when seven people were
killed in an attack credited to Al Qaida. Since then, the United States
secured access to the area, which contains the Iraqi government complex as
well as the American embassy.
Officials acknowledged that the penetration of the Green Zone marked a
major success for Sunni insurgents. They said the insurgents overcame
numerous checkpoints, where visitors undergo inspection for metal and
explosives.
But over the last six months, an official said, the government
identified an erosion in security around parliament. He said bodyguards of
parliamentarians forced their way past Iraqi guards without being properly
searched.
Earlier, at least 10 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated
a truck full of explosives on a bridge over the Tigris River. The bridge
collapsed, sending cars into the river.
Officials raised the likelihood that the suicide bomber was granted
entry by Iraqi staffers in the Green Zone. They said two suicide explosive
vests were found in parliament after the attack.
"There are some groups that work in politics during the day and do
things other than politics at night," Iraqi government spokesman Ali Dabbagh
said.
