IRAN MAINTAINS FUEL IMPORT REDUCTION
NICOSIA — Iran plans to maintain its sharp reduction in gasoline
imports.
The Iranian Oil Ministry intends to import up to 15 million liters of
gasoline per day, less than 50 percent of that ordered during the first half
of 2007. In June 2007, the ministry implemented fuel rationing in a move
that has saved $1 billion worth of imports.
"The oil ministry has issued temporary permission to import 14 million
to 15 million liters of gasoline per day," Iranian Deputy Oil Minister
Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said on Oct. 14.

Officials said the ministry has already spent its $2.5 billion fuel
import budget for 2007. They said parliament has rejected supplemental
funding, forcing the state-owned National Iranian Oil Co. to pay for fuel
imports until another budget was drafted and approved.
